What is the first thing I need to do if I want to become a commercial truck driver in New Mexico?

Learning how to properly operate and maintain a big rig takes lots of intensive training. Furthermore, there is a long list of rules, procedures, policies, and regulations every truck driver must learn. Attending a truck driving school is the best way to learn about truck driving and receive all the training you need to pass the New Mexico CDL exam.

What vehicles require a CDL to operate?
You must get a New Mexico CDL if you want to drive any of the following:

  • A vehicle transporting 15 or more passengers.

It is not required and you may be able to pass the knowledge or written portion of the CDL exam by just studying the Commercial Drivers License Manual, but you will definitely need professional training in order to pass the second part of the exam: the skills driving test. Without the proper training, you will have no idea how to properly drive or operate the vehicle.

Are there additional tests I must pass other than the written test and the skills test?
If you would like to get endorsements in addition to your CDL, there is a specific test for each one. Also, those driving passenger buses and tanker trucks are required to pass specialized written tests.

What does the skills/driving portion of the New Mexico CDL exam entail?
The skills test is divided up into three parts: the pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and the on-road test.

What is a passing score on the CDL exam?
You must get an 80% or higher on both the written and skills tests to receive your CDL.

What if I fail one or both of the tests?
If you fail any portion of the CDL exam, you can retest in exactly one week. If you fail any part three times in a row, you can retake the test in six months.
